Literally surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Englewood has been called the “Gem of the Suncoast”.
Much of the area’s housing enjoys close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, the Barrier island of Manasota Key between the Gulf and the Intracoastal and on or near the Intracoasta/Lemon Bay. Vacationers are treated to a variety of resort accommodations and quality restaurants. Englewood has 4 beaches on the barrier island of Manasota Key. Englewood Beach and Manasota Pass Beach both offer a variety of amenities. Manasota Beach boasts 14 acres of gulf front beach and sand dunes with special areas set-aside for sheltered tables, barbecue pits, boardwalks and bathhouse facilities. Blind Pass Beach is ideal for swimming, fishing and has more than 60 acres of nature trails. There's a docking area for boaters on the Intra Coastal Waterway. The weather is near perfect, with temperatures averaging 64 degrees Fahrenheit in January while August averages 81.9. During the summer months, late afternoon showers with breezes from the Gulf of Mexico act as natural air conditioning. State Road 776 provides convenient access to Englewood, connecting with U.S. 41 and I-75 via Jacaranda Boulevard (Exit 35) or the River Road connection with I-75 (Exit 34). Interstate Highway 75 traverses the county in a north/south direction. U.S. Highway 41 (also known as Tamiami Trail) is the other main north/south route. It runs and even parallels the ocean from Tampa to Miami. Southwest Florida International Airport offers jet service and connections to areas all over the world from its facility southeast of Englewood and near Fort Myers. Residents and visitor often use the Sarasota/Bradenton airport as well. Englewood’s shoreline borders the Gulf of Mexico, the Intracoastal Waterway, Charlotte Harbor and the Myakka River. Many consider this region a waterfront paradise for both saltwater and freshwater fishing, cruising, sailing and the great outdoors. Few places in Florida can boast of so many tropical beaches like Englewood Beach, Manasota Beach, Blind Pass Beach and Stump Pass Beach. For the natural beauty of Florida and its wildlife Englewood is rich with parks. Cedar Point, Don Pedro Barrier Island, Indian Mound Park, Kiwanis Park and the Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center are worth checking out. Also close at hand are the Oscar Schere State Recreation Area and nearby Myakka River State Park for kayaking, canoeing and hiking. Prime fishing is found in Lemon Bay and Stump Pass. As an aquatic preserve, Lemon Bay is also an underwater ecosystem of mangrove, sea grasses and oyster communities. Golfers abound with eight golf courses in Englewood alone and many more in the surrounding towns. Residents enjoy good hardball with the minor leagues in the summer months (former home of the Texas Rangers in the spring) at the Charlotte County Stadium Complex on State Road 776. The Englewood Sports Complex is great for families featuring lots of fields for amateur baseball, softball and soccer as well as tennis courts, playground and picnic areas. San Casa Athletic Complex also draws a number of budding atheletes while the Trangaili Community Center features a teen center, meeting facility and tennis courts. Check your calendar, for Englewood hosts many activities for all to enjoy. Among them are: September’s Pioneer Days festival; March Madness Seafood Festival; Florida International Air Show featuring the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and Golden Knights; Manasota Beach Art Show; Englewood Rotary Fine Arts Festival; Boca Grande Tarpon Tournament held in July; 4th of July fireworks; and numerous other events throughout the year. There are several cultural opportunities, too, including the Lemon Bay Playhouse, the Lemon Bay Fine Arts Series and activities sponsored by the Englewood Performing Arts Association.
